I'm a graduate researcher at the School of Visual Arts in New York, seeking to interview families who have experienced the loss of an infant. My master’s thesis concerns how the Victorian tradition of postmortem photos is continued today in the amazing work of NILMDTS photographers and families, proving the lasting value of preserving the image memory of a lost child.
I’ve interviewed the area photography coordinator for New York City, and now hope to meet with some parents who can share their photos and speak about the comfort or meaning of the pictures to them and the rest of their family and friends, and how the photos help them cope with and understand their great loss.
My questions will be open ended and sensitive, to allow you to talk about whatever you want at your own comfort level. Your personal details will be protected in the final written thesis if you wish. I don't have a preconceived idea of what I will find and am tremendously grateful for anyone willing to share their personal memories with me. If it isn’t possible to meet in person we can communicate by email or phone. Thanks so much!
