I just found out that an old friend and his wife just lost their 10mo baby girl to pneumonia last month. I have never met his wife and have not had any contact with him or his family in years... but I am just heartbroken for them and the loss they are going through. I am a mother of 4 children myself and have a baby only a few days younger than their little girl that passed... I can't even begin to imagine the grief and pain they must be going through. As a mother, my heart especially goes out to his wife...

Anyway, I'd like to put together a little care package for their family. They have 4 surviving children... approx. the following ages: 10yo ds, 8 yo dd, 5yo ds, 3yo ds. I'm just not sure what to put in the package for the kids. So far I am planning on putting in a gift card from home depot or something so the family can go pick out a tree or some plants, some balloons and coloring materials that they can use to write a letter/draw pictures for their baby sister and send them up to Heaven for her birthday in a couple of weeks, maybe a willow tree figurine or something for the mom....
but I was thinking it would be really nice if I could think of specific items for the kids... particularly for the 10yo boy and 8 yo girl (who just lost her only sister). I'm just not sure what to include.... do I put in things that are just fun and games... or do I put in items that might be significant for them and help them remember their baby sister?

They have a lot of support from family and friends, so I'm sure they really don't need anything (and they live in a different state, anyway).... I'm sure it's just nice to know that people are thinking of you in your times of trial and grief.

Any thoughts/advice would be appreciated.

I think for the girl I would do some sort of locket or nice piece of more "adult" looking jewelry that will make her feel like she's really a big girl and special. With the locket you could ask the mom to put a picture in of big sister with little sister. I would also get them something fun and cheerful. the 3 and 5 year old DS's would probably like something Thomas or Cars (depends on the kids...5 probably Cars, 3 probably Thomas). I don't have a 10 yo DS so I will have to get back to you in 4 years on that one. :)

For the little ones for their memento type present, possibly a build a bear certificate and have them put a laminated heart shaped picture of their little sister in the bear (laminated so it won't dissolve in the washings I'm sure the critter will need). I don't know how much those cost, possibly more than you would want to spend? Who knows, maybe even the 8 yo DD would want a build a bear more than jewelry...a bit more on the comforting side for sure.
