Our daughter’s name, Kavya Anjali, means “a gift or offering of poetry to God” (East Indian origin/meaning). She was born on December 26, 2007, and lived for two amazing hours. We had known we were going to lose Kavya since she was 25w5d gestation due to renal agenesis. It was the most difficult time of our lives. The grief nurse at our hospital referred us to Jolene Kroeger and NILMDTS. We decided to accept their services and it was the best thing we could have done to memorialize our baby. We knew beforehand that I was going to deliver on the 26th, and Jolene was waiting for me upon our return to the hospital room from the OR. I remember looking at her kind face and warm eyes and thinking, “Thank God she’s here.” Over the course of Kavya's life and for some time after, Jolene unobtrusively snapped photo after photo of our darling baby as we spent time with her. As we waited for the pictures to be sent to us after going home, we found it so difficult to convey to others the atmosphere surrounding us during Kavya’s short life. It’s hard for people to understand that her birth was not just about tragedy, heartbreak, sadness and death. Now that we have these priceless, amazing photos, I am able to show my family and friends that Kavya’s life was more about beauty, joy, peace, serenity, and love; they can see it in every photo that Jolene took. Even better, I can look back at these and remind myself that I have something to be thankful for and not just to grieve over. Kavya was a precious gift from God. Jolene and NILMDTS were our angels. We could never possibly thank you enough.

Thank you - it was. Kavya was still with us in the photo, and she was making small noises. Priya laughed because Kavya was "talking" to her, and our very talented and gifted photographer (Jolene Kroeger) snapped a couple of shots at just the right moment! She got so many good, candid shots. The second one in the post is right after we had (very quickly) washed her up to look pretty for visitors and my husband and I were both dressing her for the first time. She looked right at the camera and opened her squinty little eyes a tiny bit. I have such a hard time deciding what photos to share because they are all my favorites!

I wish I could have seen my baby with his eyes open but they wouldn't let me hold him because he was on oxygen. We tried and tried because my first child was supposed to die because she was premature and had premi lungs but she fought through it. So every kid after that I panicked and wanted to hold them right after I got to my room but they wouldn't let me with him. I did get to hear him cry everytime we had to leave him in the nursery.

Thank you everyone for your kind words. I feel so unusually connected to the babies I view on this website. These pictures are special ; not just because they're professional, but I think because our babies must all be kindred souls...they have all been touched by the hand of God. Perhaps that is why they seem so beautiful and special when I "meet" them in their photographs. The love that I see in each picture is almost tangible - the babies are surrounded by love (even in the pictures of them by themselves). I could sit and look at everyone's gorgeous, precious babies all day, and read their stories. We really have some special babies looking down on us from Heaven, and some really special people in this organization.

Maybe our baby angels are all up in heaven looking beautiful and having fun, just waiting for us to join them someday...

Kavya is beautiful, a true little princess. The pictures really captured her sweet spirit. She is so surrounded with love. I, too, love the one of Priya with her baby sister... I love to see the pictures of the sibblings with their baby brothers or sisters, because most of the time, they are too young to remember the details, to remember being there, so the pictures become that much more priceless.

Thank you so much for sharing her life and her pictures with us. My heart goes out to you and your family.

Wow.... look at all that dark hair! What beautiful chubby cheeks. What a beautiful Angel she is. My heart goes out to you and your family.

I, too, agree that each baby I see on here I feel a special closeness with. I'm so glad more and more of you share your images with us. It's such a blessing for all the saddness to see the love and joy that you experienced by having your little Angel for any length of time.

Thanks for being such a blessing to me. :)

How is Priya doing after losing her sister?

Priya is doing much better than her mother. She looks at things with the sweetness and innocence of a small child. It's just facts to her - sometimes babies can't come home with us - they have something broken that can't be fixed, and so they can't live. We have told her that Kavya's spirit is with God and since she's still so young (will be 3 in May) she can't quite grasp that concept. But she has lots of love for her little sister and is very proud of being a "big sister to Kavya". I cherish her innocence because it forces me to look at our loss in a different way.

Also, thank you all so much for your sweet words. I'm glad others can see the beauty in those captured moments. My favorite picture changes daily, so I'm going to post another here. I love the look on Priya's face. She's such a proud big sister!
