My friend, Melanie, gave birth to twins on 7/14/08. They were diagnosed with Twin to Twin Transfusion Syndrome (one baby gets too much food, blood, fluid and the other gets too little) at around 17 weeks and survived a rare in utero surgery where a Dr. severed a blood vessel with a laser and pumped in/out amniotic fluid. Melanie was on bed rest at home for 8 weeks and was then moved to the hospital at 25 weeks. Her water broke at just past 27 weeks and she delivered her baby girls via C-section.
Summer weighed 2 lbs. 11 oz and Brooke weighed 2 lbs. 15 oz.
Brooke was the baby that had too much fluid and this put pressure on her heart. She had to be transferred to Children's Hospital almost right after she was born. Unfortunately, she started bleeding in her brain and wasn't responding to the treatments. After 10 days, the Dr.'s figured out that she had a fatal and rare lung disease and would not survive. Melanie had to say goodbye to one of her daughters and she passed away on 7/24/08 surrounded by family and love.
Summer had been recovering nicely. She was off oxygen and no longer needed the UV lights for jaundice. They were just waiting for her to gain some weight and start eating on her own. On 7/30, she was transferred to Children's Hospital for emergency surgery on her lower intestines. They were not receiving any blood flow and had to be operated on. I don't have all the details, but I know that there is another surgery scheduled for this precious child.
Please pray for my friend Melanie, her husband, and their five (three plus Brooke and Summer) children. They are being challenged right now beyond the scope of my understanding.
