I went to the dr today and tested positive for a UTI. My doctor prescribed Bactrim (which she gave me when I had a UTI with Justin although his was much later in the pregnancy). She said it is safe but when I looked it up on safefetus.com it is listed as one of the "only take if the risk of not taking it outway the risk to the fetus". Anyone have experience with Bactrim or know more about it? I trust my doctor but it makes me a little nervous.
I searched for information on this because I get frequent UTI's and was also concerned.
Bactrim has an ingredient that reduces the absorption of Folic Acid. Folic Acid is crucial during pregnancy and preconception because it reduces the baby's risk of developing neural tube and other birth defects. Maybe you should ask your Dr. if you should increase your normal 400 mg Folic Acid daily intake to compensate (unless your prenatal vitamin already has more than this)? I hope this helps.

My prenatal vitamin already has 1mg (which = 1000 micrograms). Will that help? Is there anything else about this drug I should worry about?
I found the following information while searching the Internet:
It is recommended that pregnant women who are being treated with Bactrim should be given 5 to 10 mg (5,000 to 10,000 micrograms) of folic acid daily (although this has not been tested).
Bactrim is considered a Class C Risk Category to pregnant women because there have not been any adequate studies done on pregnant women. If I were in your situation, I would talk to my Dr. about changing to another antibiotic or ask about his/her thoughts on the megadoses of folic acid recommended.
I hope that the information that I found helps you.
