My sis in law is expecting - due in February. She went to the doctor today to find she has to go to a specialist because something is not right with baby's spinal chord. She has her appointment this Thursday 9-25. If you would please keep her and baby in your prayers, I would be most grateful. She stopped by my work place today and told me the news. She's been through so much, and now this-- on top of everything else. My heart is breaking for her. I keep praying this will turn out fine. I don't know what else to do~

Thanks everyone, for the prayers and support. I finally got the news last night. It was confirmed my little niece has spina bifida. At this point, we don't know if the lower part of her spine is enclosed or open. She will have to go through surgery shortly after she is born, immediately after she is born if her spine is open. Everything else with her looks good.
My sis in law told me she was doing fine; I know different. She needed a couple of extra days to absorb everything, which is understandable. Her next appointment is on the 15th, I think. Im thankful the doctors caught this at an early stage so they can monitor the rest of her pregnancy closely.
My sis in law said our little niece is an active little girl, constantly moving so that is one good sign.
I know your prayer lists are long already, but if you would please add us too, it would mean the world to our family. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart.

I thought I would mention the Fetal Surgery that they can perform to make the corrections before birth. I'm sure the doctors are weighing all the options but I have seen so many kids that have had this done who are completely mobile and have far less operations after birth. Since they caught the defect early this may be a possibility for them. Remember that I am willing to talk to your S-I-L anytime. I will be saying prayers for your niece and family.

I will be praying for your sister. My name is Heather, I am 35 yrs old, I was born with Spina Bifida. The open one. The doctor who delivered me told my mom to take me home and that I would probably die of infection. My grandparents wouldn't accept that! They packed me up and took me 3 hours away to a children's hospital where they did surgery to close my spine. The doctor's there told my family that I would never walk and have multiple other problems. I am a fairly healthy mother of two, one on earth and an angel in heaven. I walk and talk and lead a normal life! I work 12 hour shifts as a Respiratory Therapist on my feet all day long. Though not without pain. I also have a tethered spinal cord, something that goes along with spina bifida. Please tell your sister to have faith, doctor's don't have all the answers! The only one who knows for sure the outcome of your niece is the God Almighty! I pray for the best. If you would like to contact me, my email is heather0388@msn.com. Hugs and Prayers, Heather

Update... :(
Her spine is open which means surgery after birth. She also has fluid on her brain that is prohibiting development. Doctors were questioning survival and QOL. The outlook is not as positive as we had hoped~
Thank you to all for your thoughts and prayers. Please keep them coming. :(

SIL was admitted to Methodist Hospital in Rochester MN today-unexpectedly. She was planning on just having a check-up appointment. Her water had been slowly leaking and was at a dangerous level so the doctor had her admitted. Very possible baby will be delivered tonight~
The wait begins. Weather is being un-cooperative, snowing and icy roads so I don't even know if I can make it over there to be with her and my brother as Rochester is 2 hours away. Baby will either survive after her cord is cut or she won't. If she does survive she will need surgery immediately after and docs are giving less than 50% chance of her coming out of it fine. Then... the photographer I had lined up for a session is out of state until Monday. Im praying I can line another photographer up...
My dad was just released from Saint Mary's (Rochester) hospital yesterday after having a heartattack last week. Dear God, please give us strength....

Just off the phone w/my brother. He and his 3 girls are on their way back home. Said sil will stay in hospital over the weekend. They are not going to induce labor and hopefully all will be fine until Monday. Also found out Tayla is breech which means probably c-section delivery. As long as contractions do not start... everything should be fine. Praying so... thanks for the support guys. It means more than you will ever know~
Going to find a back-up photographer, just in case (wish me luck)

1.15.09 Tayla Cicillia was born Saturday January 10th 4lbs, 11 oz little more than 15 inches long. Breathing on her own and putting her lungs to work with crying :) She had a successful surgery Monday, January 12th for her lower spine. All seems to be so far so good. Other than catching pnemonia (which seems to be much better now) and having to be on and off a respirator she is doing fine. SIL was released from the hospital, Tayla will stay for a while longer until she gains more strength and the docs are sure she can breathe 100% on her own. I was able to contact a wonderful NILMDTS photographer and am anxiously waiting to receive pics from my brother and sil. Due to weather, I have not been able to see my new little niece yet, but will in due time, although it's hard waiting!
I just want to send heart-felt thanks to all of you keeping our family in your prayers. It truly means the world to us~ we just went through a very scary time filled with much uncertainty; considering what we were told from the doctors at first about Tayla's prognosis, we just did not know and were hoping for the best yet preparing for the worse~now we have hope that Tayla will eventually be able to come home~with her family. As soon as I can get my hands on a pic or two, I will post. Thanks again everyone for your prayers, your love and your support. You are all wonderful friends near and dear to my heart ~

She will be 3 weeks this Saturday (1-31-09) and is doing great! SIL said she took a bottle for the first time to day and did really well. Still not able to come home just yet, but we are hopeful sometime next month as long as all her testing she needs to have done come out ok. *praying for that*

Thanks again everyone for all the support~ our family is more than grateful to all of you for keeping us and Tayla in your prayers.
