View Full Version : Scents to remind you of baby
Benjamin's Mommy

When Benjamin was stillborn, my sister showed up at the hospital with a vial of perfume. She made it using essential oils and water. She came up with a mix that she thought was relaxing, and it was.
Now, 6 months later, I think it is one of the coolest things ever. By now, Benjamin's baby scent is gone from his blanket and his hat. But I still have that vial. While it isn't Benjamin's scent, it still reminds me of him because I had it with me at the hospital. But it isn't a bad thing - I don't break down or anything. It just makes me smile.
So, this is a possible idea for friends/family to bring to the hospital if you know the outcome of a family member's baby. A special perfume or special scented baby wash that mommy can go back to and experience at a later date (if she wants to, of course). A way to preserve a "scent" to help mommy feel closer to baby after some time has passed and the grief has softened around the edges.

This is a wonderful idea. I still get a little nosatalgic when I smell baby kinds of smells. All the senses help us to remember things.

That is wonderful.
One thing I try to do is to take those little bottles of baby powder or lotion with me. If I notice mom does not have any I will ask (have to try to read parents) if she would like to put some lotion/powder on her babe. I leave the family with it.
As a photographer I tend to sprinkle a little baby powder on the inside of the clothing if I am dressing baby for the family or in the blanket. I know how I love the smell of Baby Magic lotion and Johnson & Johnson Baby Powder and smile whenever I smell it as a mom.

Scents are so powerful. I know for me, I can smell the chapstick and bodywash I was using in the hospital and it brings me back to when Murray was ALIVE! Thanks for sharing this!

Baby magic. It was what I put on Avery every day she was alive and what I put on her after I bathed her the last time. I put it on every single day. If I close my eyes really hard and breathe in deep, I can still smell it on her little blanket.

A Mariah Carey perfume. It is a kind of pinkish bottle w/ a pink butterfly on top. My best friend in the whole world gave that as a gift to me when she visited me up in the hospital after I had Lillee. It came in a gift box w/ a little stuffed puppy dog in it. Before her funeral, I went snuck in by myself & saw her & reached into my purse & sprayed a little bit onto my finger & put a dab on her little neck & then sprayed some on myself. Everytime I spray it now it's like a little bit of me smells like what she smells like now.

That is so cool to have. I have blankets and clothes that has Cassandra's baby scent all over it. The blanket I got from the Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep photographer(Thanks Tina) is wonderful and I sleep with it all night long each night. I always wrap my arms around it and smell it and it helps me sleep better at night. This is such a great idea she had and have still. Good to keep in mind.

I also use the Baby Magic, I had it in Jennifer's diaper bag and I still have the original large bottles of it and I sometimes put it on my arms so that when I am holding her things close to me, I get that scent. I also will put small touches of it on her things. I massaged Jennifer in this after she was born still because I did that with all of my children. I just convinced myself that she was sleeping. I would love to find a bottle of 'Love's Baby Soft', I remember that perfume from when I was a preteen/teenager. I loved it. Still do. A baby powder/lotion smelling candle would be an awesome find too. I love anything that brings me closer to Jennifer.
Thanks for mentioning this. I had never mentioned that I put her baby lotions on me because I thought that made me sound odd. Honestly, I am using it so sparingly because I never want to use all of 'those' bottles, because those were her's specifically. When I do finally use it all, I will probably end up just refilling from new bottles. THAT makes me sound odd, but those bottles will be something that I keep forever, even though that are just plastic bottles.

While I was carrying Vayden someone sent me a care pack that had a noodle and boo baby kit in it. At first when I got it I thought now why would she send this, then when he was born I found out. Noodle & Boo has an awesome unique smell and at $26.00 a bottle you don't find it in your regular isle at Target. I still have the bottle of lotion, body wash and shampoo that we used on Vayden. Whenever I really really miss him, I use a lil lotion on my hands and go to bed with my hands near my face. Noodle & Boo will now forever be Vayden's scent
