i'm guessing this is the right place...
when we received our daughter's autopsy results we were told she had bloodclots that formed in her cord and placenta that slowly cut off her oxygen. is there anything that can be done to help prevent something like this next time? her doctors just kept saying it was a "fluke" but that doens't really help when preparing for more children. we have friends that also had a similar situation and her doctor said blood thinners and taking any future babies before their due date. i haven't seen my doctor since we got the results and will be switching doctors, but is there a test that i should be having done now? and are there any tests that can be done the next time i'm pregnant to help catch something like this. not only do i not ever want to loose a baby again, but izzy struggled to make enough oxygen...i don't want another baby to struggle. any answers or tips would be helpful.

thank you
beccah

Beccah, I had several infarcts in my placenta and they were concerned about clotting disorders. They tested me for the common ones, but I so far, they are negative. I'd suggest meeting with a perinatal doctor if you haven't already. Our OB was not as equipped to handle the multitude of our questions as the perinatal doc. Our peri said that heparin is safe during pregnancy if needed, and also a baby aspirin a day. Its so hard to read the autopsy before talking with your doctors. I hope you get in to talk to them soon. ((hugs))

I was also tested for these disorders since I had a total placental abruption but my results were all negative for clotting disorders. I know of other mommies with this problem that had to take Heparin shots throughout pregnancy for this. So yes there are things that can be done to fix this problem

I would ask them to test you for all of the clotting disorders that are out there. Protein C, Protein S, Factor V...etc. I am borderline Protein C deficient so they have me take a baby aspirin a day to thin my blood just a tad bit.

this is causing my heart to ache because i was just reading a thread about someone else losing their baby because of a blood clot in the cord, i think....but i am posting the link so you can see what the drs have done for her so far and the answers she has received. God bless you.

Get tested for clotting disorders. Once we got Emma's autopsy results back and saw she died from a blood clot in the placenta, they sent us to a specialist who then sent me for a bunch of tests (they took 12 vials of blood!). I now know that I have Factor V Leiden. The next time I'm pregnant, I will be on blood thinners.

If you get tested for a clotting disorder and they don't find anything, you can take baby aspirin throughout your next pregnancy and that should help reduce the risk of clots.

I'm sorry for your loss, PM me if you want to talk.

When my daughter was born stillborn my Dr. said he didnt know what happened. I did not settle for that, because I knew there was nothing wrong with her. So I pushed for answers and they ended up offering me thrombosis blood test, testing for any disorders. It ended up, my condidtion with my blood causes clots!! And found out that an asprin an day would have and could have prevented her death. I am also hearing that heparin is an injectable blood thinner that is available as well to pregnant women. Before having any other children, talk to your Dr. about what you can take prior, to prevent these possible deaths!! That should not be happening. They do take a lot of blood for the test, but its not that bad.

i will be making an appointment with a new doc this week and will have her run these tests. its just frustrating that something as simple as an asprin a day could have saved my baby. if its safe to do during pregnancy, then why don't they have all pregnant mothers do this and help cancel out something like this happening? grrrr!

thank you again ladies for the info and support...you are amazing!

check with your doctor, but I do think the aspirin increases your chance of bleeding slightly. But if you have a known clotting condition, the benefits would outweigh the risks. At least this is what our peri told us. Good luck when you talk to your new doctor.

I was on a baby asprin with Shyanne even though I didnt have a blood clotting disorder they thought I had an inplanting disorder.but they also keep me on it during my pregnancy. then tested me later for diffrent things from blood clot disorder to Thyrod.then the chromosome rearrangement. So hang in there and ask for the BC disorder tests

went to the doctor today, and she did take blood to do all the tests that you ladies told me about it. she took the time to answer all of our questions. we probably will use her when we do get pregnant again, which she said doesn't have to be as long as we were originally told. results from the tests should be back after thanksgiving so for now i guess we got good news. we now have a doctor that will take us and have a plan we're comfortable with for the next pregnancy. for now that's enough.
yesterday was our 3 month mark and it went better then i thought it would. thank you again ladies for all the support and advice!

Beccah, I am glad your appointment went well. I hope all your results come back the way you want them too. It is reassuring to have a good Doctor to go to when you have suffered a loss. I had all of those blood tests run myself. The Doctor who did my C-Sec with Abbi suggested it when I went in April for my annual. She was not originally my Dr. But she was so compassionate and even remembered me almost 4 months later. I decided to switch to her because the Doctor I had that also delivered my Son 9 years ago came in the day after I had Abbi and told me we could have another child WTF???? It makes all the difference to have a doctor that actually cares

I just recently had the same blood work for the blood clotting profile and I had two come back with abnormal numbers. They were Protein C defiency and Antithrombian III activity. My doctor referred me to see a hematologist and I'm so glad that I did. He told me that my levels were only slightly elevated, so he wants to run the tests again in 3 months because the numbers are elevated because of pregnancy. He said that your body naturally elevates these proteins that break down clots during pregnancy because blood clots are more common during pregnancy because of the increased blood flow to your uterus. It sounds like what happened is that your body doesn't produce enough of these proteins that break down blood clots.

Anyways why I'm saying this is that your obgyn doesn't specialize in blood, so I would suggest seeing a hematologist once your blood work tests come back. He will be able to help you more and make sure this doesn't happen again in your next pregnancy. I know it's one more doctor to see but it really made me feel better to see the hematologist because that is what they specialize in.

I hope that you get good tests results, answers, and a plan to help you in your next pregnancy.

my doctor's office called yesterday and we have to go back in next week to go over the results. when we left there last she told me that i could call after thanksgiving and as long as the results were negative for any disorders, they would give me the results over the phone. and since they called me and are having me come back in i'm guessing they found something. but she also told us that they wouldn't test for anything they couldn't fix. so i'm hoping that we'll leave there with a new plan for when we do get pregnant again. fingers crossed!

My fingers are crossed for you!! Just think - in a week you will know what you have to do or what your body will have to do. That is some pretty good news, none the less. When you decide to pregnant again you will know that you have done everything you can to bring a healthy baby into this world. Your strength during all of this is commendable and I know that Izzy will be right there the whole time guiding you and the new addition. Please keep us all updated - I know everything will be just fine.
Happy Belated Angelversary Izzy!!

so, we saw the doctor yesterday and i do indeed have a disorder. mine is called Lupus Anticoagulant...which is named incorectly. i do not have lupus and actually i clot too much so it's not an anticoagulant either. because i clot too much i cannot take birth control anymore and will have to give myself shots while i am pregnant. i'm not very excited about the shots, but everything i've read says as long as i follow doctor's orders then we should have healthy babies! so that outweighs the yucky shots! it'll still be a couple months before we start trying again, but now we know there is something we can actually do to have a healthy baby! yayayayayay!

Lupus Anticoagulant is one of the things my doctor checked for as well. I'm glad you have some answers. I felt so relieved once I had answers.

I can't take BCPs anymore either. Which shots will you be on, do you know?

i don't know what the name of the shots are. we haven't been back to see the doctor, and won't until we are pregnant. one question my husband had was "did the fact that i was on birth control at the time of the tests affect the results?" probably something i need to call the doc about....but if any of you ladies know the answer to this let me know. thanks!
